Italy-based Panariagroup is a leader in the ceramics sector and a long-time Microban® partner.
As is the case with all our partners, the team at Microban® is always looking for new methods and opportunities to push the innovation envelope and advance the antimicrobial technologies we provide. These efforts have been particularly successful in the ceramic sector with Panariagroup.
Microban® antibacterial technology has been built into a wide variety of bathroom products such as toilet levers, sponges, and more for over 35 years. However, the road to creating antibacterial ceramic products wasn't quite as simplistic. A normal ceramic manufacturing method called sintering requires the material to be exposed to temperatures between 1800°C - 2000°C for days or weeks at a time, depending on the ceramic and process details. As such, incorporating standard antibacterial technologies into ceramic products during the manufacturing process was extremely challenging, and Microban® quickly recognised the need for greater innovation in this field.
After seven years of research and more than $1 million in development costs, Microban® has crafted solutions that can be added to a ceramic product during the normal manufacturing process, becoming an integral and permanent part of the glaze. These EPA and BPR approved antibacterial technologies reduce the growth of bacteria on the tile for its expected lifetime. In 2016, Microban® was awarded two United States patents relating to antimicrobial technology in ceramics. These patents cover the incorporation of antimicrobials into ceramic-based products such as floor and wall tiles, and sanitary ware products like toilets and sinks.
