Several years of research, technical advancements and product trials led to the development of a cushion-backed, marine grade fabric that has quickly become the product of choice in many boat models.

Finding solutions for protecting marine fabrics from the growth of mold and mildew has been a challenge for boat manufacturers since they began using vinyl seating and carpeting to furnish them decades ago.

With an established 10-year partnership, Phifer and Microban® have led the solar screening and technical textile industries with multiple development projects to address market opportunities with woven fabric infused with antimicrobial, anti-mold and mildew protection. One of these projects examined commonly used marine flooring products and noted the challenges that carpet and other flooring options presented to the marine industry. The development team committed to working on a solution to change the marketplace, with three goals in mind:

  • Develop a flooring fabric that would withstand the harsh marine environment.
  • Include built-in protection against degrading bacteria, mold and mildew.
  • Meet consumers’ high expectations for a designer look and feel for the flooring material specified in their boats.

This revolutionary product combines three technologies for a marine flooring that provides enhanced benefits for the consumer, including increased durability and clean-ability. The team of scientists and engineers at Microban collaborated closely with the manufacturing professionals at Phifer to customize a zinc-based solution to inhibit the growth of stain- and odor-causing bacteria, mold and mildew in the fabric. ZPTech® by Microban has been shown to provide superior protection against a broad spectrum of microorganisms and is bluesign® approved as a solution for sustainable textile production. Microban technology is incorporated into the fabric during the manufacturing process, which means it will not wash off or wear away for the life of the product while providing 24/7 protection against stains, odors and degradation.

"The strategic partnership between Phifer and Microban required persistence and flexibility, but the investment resulted in a product that has quickly become the leading marine flooring option with additional applications across other industries yet to come."
