Koala Kare: Supporting families with convenience and enhanced cleanliness

The first two decades of the 21st century have seen a huge boost in family-friendly activities and facilities for all. Today’s parents don’t hit a ‘pause’ button on their lives, but simply take their toddlers along when they visit cafés, restaurants and even stadiums, with the expectation that all necessary amenities will be available to them. Koala Kare has supported this brave new world from the start, persuading businesses to provide families with anything they might need along the way, and helping to make their lives easier.

The company is the leading light in high quality baby changing stations, innovating cleaner, more durable and practical solutions, and its distinctive Koala brand can be seen all over the world. Bonnie Yatkeman, Brand Manager at Koala Kare, talks about the importance of incorporating antimicrobial technology into its products, and describes how its collaboration with Microban® International has enhanced the quality of its baby changing stations and helped to reassure users of cleanliness.

The Company: Koala Kare

Koala Kare was founded in 1987, when three businessmen saw the need for public facilities that saved parent’s from having to change diapers on the restaurant floor. The company has been a world leader in the manufacture and distribution of high quality baby care products ever since, and the brand name has become a synonym for baby changing stations. Always in tune with parents’ needs, Koala Kare offers a wide range of products – including changing stations, high chairs and booster seats – as well as working to raise awareness of the need to include changing stations in men’s restrooms as well as women’s.

The Challenge: Baby changing stations

The cleanliness of public baby changing stations can drastically vary from place to place, and greatly depends on the business owner. However, even if a baby changing station is cleaned on a daily basis – and parents take care to leave it in the same state as they found it in – it will still inevitably fall victim to bacterial growth1 given the location and nature of the product.

The Solution: Built in antimicrobial protection

Koala Kare has partnered with Microban® International to provide its baby changing stations with built-in, long-lasting antimicrobial protection. Bonnie explained: ”It was important to provide some level of reassurance to our customers and, considering that Microban is such as strong and well-trusted name, it felt like an obvious choice to add the company’s antimicrobial technology to our products.”

Bonnie continued: “The process of integrating the protective additive into our resins was seamless, and was well managed by the Microban team. In addition, the company helped us to validate the end-product through extensive testing, including the Kirby-Bauer test, providing confidence in the efficacy of the technology. We can now proudly offer our customers, and parents using the products, baby changing stations that stay cleaner between cleans.”
