Textile technologies for odor, bacteria, mold and mildew management

With five main textile antimicrobial and odor control technologies currently in our portfolio and new developments being researched and tested every year, it can be hard to keep up with everything Microban offers and the best use cases for each. Bookmark this page because we’re breaking down the technologies in our textile division and how they are solving real-world problems. Let’s dive in:

AEGIS®

AEGIS is proven to be 99.9 percent effective in reducing odor-causing bacteria in synthetics, cotton and poly-blend fabrics for up to 25 home launderings. A durable finish applied to textiles and foams, AEGIS creates a physical defense against microorganisms by inhibiting bacteria’s ability to survive, reproduce and colonize. How? When Microorganisms come into contact with AEGIS, their cell membranes are punctured, stopping them from growing or reproducing. Additionally, AEGIS controls the development of dust mites by destroying certain fungi which are necessary for the dust mite food chain. Overall, AEGIS is great for brands looking for innovative ways to fight odors and bacteria as well as reduce the need for laundering. Home Textile partners such as AMW Nawrot, BekaertDeslee, Boyteks, Gabel, KBT Bettwaren, Frankenstolz, Westfälische Textil-Gesellschaft, Interscalit, Monks and Jaspal Home, all use AEGIS as an added level of hygiene protection. Many apparel, footwear, gear and sock brands and manufacturers also enjoy the extended freshness that AEGIS can bring – Ortholite, Faytex, Fila, Shark Helmets and Reebok just to name a few. AEGIS is available globally and it only comes from Microban. It is often imitated but never replicated!

AEGIS Vesta®

Released in 2019, AEGIS Vesta works like AEGIS, but instead punctures bacteria upon contact—preventing bacteria, mold, mildew and fungi from growing and producing foul odors on treated surfaces. As one of the first durable quat silane-based antimicrobial odor control solutions for certain cotton and polyesters fabrics, AEGIS Vesta reduces 99.9 percent of odor causing staph bacteria for up to 50 washes—while most other quat silane-based technologies only work for 25 washes. Whether applied as a durable finish on textiles or integrated into foam during the manufacturing process, AEGIS Vesta delivers improved moisture management, absorbing moisture 20 times faster than conventional quat silane-based technologies. An ideal solution for sheets, towels and other home and hospitality textiles, AEGIS Vesta can withstand high temperatures up to 140°F.

ZPTech®

While sought after for their durable, high performance capabilities, polyester and other synthetics pose an issue—a propensity for holding onto odors and stains caused by bacteria, mold and mildew even after thorough cleanings. But with Microban’s “broad spectrum” antibacterial and antifungal technology ZPTECH, microbes and fungi that cause deterioration, body odors, mold and mildew in fabrics, foam and plastics are destroyed. Delivered in a liquid dispersion for textiles, ZPTECH infiltrates bacteria’s membrane, severely hindering its ability to thrive. Additionally, ZPTECH disrupts enzymes, blocking metabolic pathways and creating an environment in which fungi can’t grow. In turn, fabrics, polymers and foam products last longer and offending odors never have a chance to take root. ZPTECH is perfect for textiles and plastics that come in contact with moist environments where mold and mildew growth thrive—think bedding, tub liners, shower curtains, upholstery, mattresses and kitchen products. Home product partners include Slip-X Solutions, Sinomax, Excell, Keeco Home and Croscill-Excell. ZPTECH is also so effective at reducing body odor that it is used for human scent management on hunting apparel and gear and can be found on Realtree, Huntsworth products and Walmart. ZPTECH is also an ideal solution for activewear, footwear and accessories and we work with some great brands like Capelli New York, Calvin Klein, TEVA, Kamik, Mission Athletic Towels, New Balance, and SIMMS Fishing. ZPTECH has a history of safe use and can be used on the most intimate of textiles.

Scentry®

Our Scentry odor capture platform for textiles is a non-biocidal odor management solution for Polyester, Cellulosics and Blends. 80% of consumers rewash active wear due to pervasive odor or failure of the garment to wash clean the first time through – Scentry can help with permanent odor buildup on textiles. Odor is a universal problem and the leading cause of consumer complaints, returns and reduced garment lifespan. Scentry works by capturing the odor on the fabric and releasing it in the wash. Scentry has the highly rated bluesign® “blue” classification and has ECO PASSPORT by Okeo-Tex® registration to give you peace of mind that you are using a treatment that can be used in the most stringent of sustainable textiles manufacturing processes. With its global availability, ease of use and competitive pricing you can integrate another sustainability feature into your products seamlessly.

Scentry Revive®

A patent-pending technology proven to neutralize odors and maintain freshness on apparel for up to five consecutive wears between washes. Because of its vast and continuous ability to neutralize odor it is ideal for hard to wash or items that cannot be washed. Scentry Revive is designed to permeate textiles and form a protective barrier that doesn’t just trap odors—but neutralizes them. When odors come into contact with Scentry Revive’s revolutionary odor-capture technology, they’re neutralized and dissipate—wear after wear even without washing after each use. And because the revolutionary technology continues to work for up to 50 home washings, it can save 26 gallons of water every year on each treated garment. With the reduced need for laundering, Scentry Revive extends the life of any treated product and is ideal for workout apparel, socks and footwear applications. Improving a textile’s useful life has broad appeal for several reasons. Wearing a garment for longer allows for less consumption of resources such as water or energy and keeps it out of landfills. Washing less is a small decision that can have a huge environmental impact over time and can also keep microfibers out of the waterways.
