Frequently Asked Questions

We are in a complex industry with often times, complex acronyms. Our Frequently Asked Questions section may help you if you are new to the industry.

1.  What is an antimicrobial?

An antimicrobial is a substance that inhibits the growth of microorganisms and suppresses microorganism reproduction.

2. What is the difference between odor capture and antimicrobial protection?

Antimicrobial additives stop odor before it is created. With odor-capture technology, odors are captured and absorbed before they generate unpleasant malodorous effects.

3.  What is Microban odor-control product protection?

Microban technology is built-in protection for textiles. It provides an added level of protection against damaging microbes such as bacteria, mold and mildew that can cause stains, odors and product deterioration or it capture unpleasant odors that become embedded in the textile such as body odor

4.  How does Microban odor-control protection work in my product?

Microban protection is incorporated into the product during the manufacturing process. Odor control protection can work in various ways. When microbes come into contact with the product surface, Microban antimicrobial protection penetrates the cell wall of the microorganism and disrupts the cell, making the microorganism unable to grow and reproduce. Textiles treated with odor-capture technology attract and absorb the odors, keeping those products fresher for longer.

5.  What benefit do I get from products with Microban odor-control protection?

Microban protection continuously prevents the uncontrolled growth of microbes that cause stains, odors and product degradation. Microban protection not only makes the textiles fresher, it also keeps them cleaner between washings.

6.  What types of microorganisms does Microban protection work against?

Microban antimicrobial protection is effective against most common bacteria, yeasts, molds and fungi that cause stains, odors and product degradation. Microban technology is not designed to protect users from disease-causing microorganisms.

7.  How do I know that Microban product protection is safe?

Consumer safety is a fundamental concern of ours. All of the odor-control technologies used are approved by the EPA for their specific use in the product in which they are used, and they have a history of safe use in consumer, industrial and medical product applications around the world.

Risk assessments by independent scientists, scientific bodies and governmental agencies (including EPA, FDA and regulatory authorities in Europe and Canada) have consistently reconfirmed the safety of our antimicrobial additives at the levels approved for use in consumer, industrial and medical products. Because our additives are built into the products themselves, using products protected with Microban does not result in consumer exposure. And unlike disinfectants and liquid antibacterial soaps, transmission directly into the environment is not an issue.

8.  Does this mean I don’t have to clean my products as much or as carefully?

No. While Microban helps make products easier to clean and keeps them cleaner during their useful life, normal cleaning practices recommended by the product manufacturer should be maintained.

9.  Does Microban protection begin working immediately?

Microban protection begins to work as soon as the microorganism comes into contact with the product surface. However, Microban technology is not a disinfectant and is not a substitute for normal cleaning practices.

10.  How long does Microban protection work?

Microban protection is built-in during the manufacturing process and will not wash off or wear away. It’s engineered to provide continuous antimicrobial and odor-capture product protection for the useful lifetime of the product, keeping the treated products in your home cleaner and fresher for longer than ever before.

11. Is the application process complicated?

No. Microban technologies are can be pad applied to textiles simply and seamlessly during the manufacturing process. And no textile binders are required.

12. Are Microban antimicrobials and odor-capture technologies compatible with other auxiliaries?

Yes. Our technologies work well with auxiliaries such as moisture management, repellency, stain release and flame retardants.

13.  Does the use of antimicrobials cause resistant strains of microorganisms?

After more than 30 years of use in numerous consumer, industrial and medical applications around the world, there has been no evidence of resistant strain development.
