AEGIS Microbe Shield®: How It Works

A preventative antimicrobial surface treatment

Microbes can survive under various conditions, but thrive in warm, humid, moisture-rich environments. Soils and other organic matter present on or within building materials, furnishings, and other objects provide microorganisms a rich source of nutrients. The basic needs for microbes to reproduce and thrive are present in almost every building. Problems arise when one or more of these is out of balance. Water leaks, sweating walls, high humidity, high temperatures, and food spills can cause rapid microbial proliferation, resulting in physical damage to environments and products.

When regular topical surface cleanings are not enough, AEGIS Microbe Shield® comes to the rescue. AEGIS Microbe Shield is a preventative antimicrobial spray treatment for every environment. AEGIS is easily sprayed on surfaces to solve the problem of odor, stain-causing bacteria growth, mold, and mildew in between regular cleanings.

How does AEGIS work on a treated surface?

When applied to surfaces, AEGIS forms a colorless, odorless, positively charged co-polymer layer that attracts, then electrocutes and ruptures, a microbe’s negatively charged cell membrane. You could think of AEGIS as a layer of electrically charged swords.

When a microorganism comes in contact with the treated surface, the “molecular sword,” or AEGIS® hydrocarbon tail, punctures the cell membrane and the positive electrical charge zaps the cell. Since nothing is transferred to the now-dead cell, the antimicrobial doesn’t lose strength and the molecule stands ready to fight again.

The technical active ingredient is a conventional quaternary ammonium salt (organo) which is chemically spliced to a silane molecule, resulting in a highly active molecule (3-trimethoxsilylpropyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride) that has both tenacious bonding capabilities as well as excellent antimicrobial properties.

During the application process, stable bonds between OH- sites on the AEGIS molecule and the positive charge on the nitrogen atoms (N+) form. The result of this chemical process is the creation of a large co-polymer chemically bonding AEGIS to the target substrate. The positively charged atom of nitrogen attracts the negatively charged cell walls of bacteria, molds, mildew, and fungi. The silane base enables the antimicrobial to anchor securely onto the substrate providing long-lasting antimicrobial product protection. The long molecular chain or “spike” is the part that comes into contact and disrupts the cell membranes.

Spray application techniques vary but the AEGIS Microbe Shield molecule bonds to a surface for long-lasting efficacy. This is not permanent and will need to be reapplied depending on the use of the surface. For low touch surfaces, the treatment can last even longer.

How do you apply AEGIS Microbe Shield to a surface?

Simply put, clean and dry the targeted surface. AEGIS surface protection technology will need to be diluted as per the product label. The technology can be sprayed, fogged, or wiped down on the target substrate. Drying time will vary from surface substrate to substrate.

What type of PPE should you wear during application?

When applying AEGIS Microbe Shield to surfaces, application professionals should always use the following recommended Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

• Nitrile gloves

• Goggles

• Mask - When vaporizing or using in a confined space use half mask with P-100 Vapor cartridges. If used in open spaces N95 masks or half mask with P-100 Vapor cartridges are recommended

• Long sleeves and pants
